President's Message, March 2012
In October 2009, we launched our premiere issue of Down the Garden Path as an online newsletter. Our mission was clear—to spread more green by going paperless. That summer, Texas had experienced one of the worst droughts on record, with Stage 2 watering restrictions in Austin. Well, as you recall—especially if you are a gardener—the summer of 2011 rivaled that record! An article in The Statesman (January 1, 2012) helped us remember: "2011 takes record for hot, hot, hot".
Gardeners are rethinking how we use and conserve water. AAGC's mission statement includes an important message: our organization is committed to "the education of citizens, emphasizing youth, in the art of gardening….to promote recreational opportunities through the media of gardening and outdoor life…"
As always, our online newsletter is filled with great advice for local gardeners…
- along with news about upcoming garden club shows and sales you won't want to miss
- recognition of our wonderful Docents who lead children and adults on educational tours through Zilker Botanical Garden—fulfilling our mission to educate youth about the art of gardening
- and, of course, details about our upcoming Zilker Garden Festival –our 55th annual festival! Enjoy the photo gallery from last year's festival to see what's in store for you this year. Mark your calendars for Saturday, March 31st and Sunday, April 1st (10am to 5pm daily). Sit back and take a "virtual tour" of our festival website and check out details on links to the annual Flower Show, Garden Talks, Music Events, Vendors, Kids' Corner, Food Court, and our Sponsors. Plan to arrive early and bring your wagons.
The festival is a family-friendly event and a great way to officially welcome spring to Austin and Central Texas…so head to Zilker Botanical Garden — this beloved patchwork quilt of cultivated green space in the heart of the City* — you'll be glad you did! See you there…
