Bickler Cupola

The Bickler Cupola at Zilker Botanical Garden is a historic architectural structure originally located atop the Bickler School, one of Austin’s earliest public schools. The school was built in 1894 and later renamed to honor educator Jacob Bickler. When the school building was demolished in 1968, the cupola was donated to the City of Austin and relocated to the garden as part of an effort to preserve important pieces of the city’s architectural history.

Today, the cupola overlooks the Mabel Davis Rose Garden and serves as one of the garden’s most recognizable landmarks and photo locations. Its red roof, open-air design, and elevated position create a scenic viewpoint within the landscape, blending historic architecture with the surrounding garden setting.

The Bickler Cupola is also part of a broader collection of preserved historical elements throughout the garden, including the Butler Window, Congress Avenue Footbridge, and other relocated Austin landmarks that were saved before formal historic preservation programs existed in the city.
