Cactus and Xerophytes In Situ: A kayak level view of desert plants

This month’s presentation will take you on a boat ride down various rivers of Texas that pass through or border the Chihuahuan Desert. On this ride you will see common to uncommon plants in their natural habitat. The key feature is that all of these plants are found within 100 yards of the river. These are plants that most people won’t ever get to see due to profound access restrictions. In some cases, these are unique plants. But either way, this will be a different view of cactus and succulents “In Situ”. Speaker Jimmy Black will discuss the conditions under which these plants grow, where they are located, and how the rivers impacts the plants growth and location.
Speaker Bio: Jimmy developed his love of cactus at the age of 12 when he started helping his mom work with succulents. He built his first dish garden at that age. Since then, he has, along with his wife Ann, established an “out-of-control hobby” focused on the propagation and care of succulents from all over the world. Jimmy has a particular affection for cactus of the Southwest and specifically the Chihuahuan desert. His favorite succulents are Pachypodiums.
He and his wife have been members of the San Antonio Cactus and Xerophyte Society since 2003. He is also a member of the Austin Society and Santa Fe Club as well as an Associate Member of TACSS and a member of CSSA. Jimmy has given scores on various aspects of succulents.

Garden club members and attendees for this meeting are welcomed to the Garden for free as part of the AAGC garden club activities.
