Austin Herb Society Meeting: Herbs & Aromatics in Traditional Mexican Cuisine

Mariana Nuño Ruiz and Ian McEnroe are authors of “Dining with the Dead – A Feast for the Souls on Day of the Deadˮ cookbook. The Austin residents will discuss their great odyssey in Mexico researching and documenting the traditions and recipes associated with Day of the Dead, known as Dia de Muertos or Dia de los Muertos in Spanish.
Mariana will also share a few samples showcasing the nuances of herbs and aromatics using fresh and dry herbs and emphasizing the importance of using the right ingredients when cooking traditional Mexican dishes.


Speaker Bio: Mariana Nuño Ruiz was born and raised in Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico, and comes from a long line of strong women, including her grandmothers. The combination of their teachings ignited Mariana’s love for cooking and to learn about ingredients, their origins, and the history of foods.

Speaker Bio: lan McEnroe was born in Michigan but grew up in Texas. His interest in photography started with a manual camera on which he learned to shoot film. lan earned his Fine Arts degree from the University of Texas, which led to his award-winning photography and a long career as a photographic consultant and an instructor.
