HOTOS February Meeting
February 3 @ 6:00 pm – 9:00 pm
Amazing Soft-Leaved Orchids
Tim Culbertson will be our guest speaker on Tuesday, February 3rd. His topic is “Amazing Soft-Leaved Orchids” which includes the genera: Pescatorea, Cochleanthes, Bollea and Huntleya. These genera are under-represented in many mixed collections.
Besides needing water and heat, genera in this alliance have low cultural demands. They are easy to grow, flower and can reach specimen size quickly when well grown. Their flowers are beautiful and many are blue. By the end of his presentation, Tim may have convinced you to give them a try. Tim will also be bringing an assortment of plants for sale. Plant sales begin at 6pm. Tim accepts credit cards, Venmo, PayPal, cash or check. Exclusive member benefit includes pre-ordering plants and saving the cost of shipping. Watch your in-box for details.

Speaker Bio: One of Tim Culbertson’s passions has always been plants. Growing orchids came as an offshoot from working at Longwood Gardens in Philadelphia just after college. From the very beginning it was all about Paphiopedilums, of which his collection numbers nearly 3,000. Tim currently manages the Paphiopedilums at Sunset Valley Orchids, and does hybridizing in a wide range of genera.
As an accredited judge with the American Orchid Society, he has served in various capacities with orchid societies in California and on the East Coast. Tim loves meeting other people who like orchids too, often finding himself traveling to shows, vendors, and peoples’ greenhouses to see the latest and greatest in new hybrids and to get the best orchid gossip. In addition to Longwood, Tim worked at the Smithsonian Institution tending to their orchids, and for years at the United States National Arboretum, collecting rare plants and documenting cultivated species and hybrids for their herbarium.
In short, Tim really likes plants.
