Meet our Summer Intern: Samantha Chee!

We’re excited to introduce Samantha Chee as she starts her internship at the Zilker Botanical Garden Conservancy this week!

Samantha is an Austin resident and an undergraduate student at the University of Washington. She is pursuing a major in Environmental Science and Resource Management and a minor in Spanish. During her time at the garden, she’ll be exploring her interests in ecosystems, plant identification, and land management. She is passionate about science, nature, and the impact that climate change has on the environment. In her free time, Samantha enjoys playing and watching soccer.

We caught up with Samantha to learn about her interests and hear what she’s excited to work on this summer – read more below:

How did you first get interested in horticulture and the natural environment?

I have always been interested in the natural environment because I am an outdoors person. In school, I have learned to identify plants and vegetation disturbances, which has made hikes more fun and thoughtful. Since joining the ZBG team, I really enjoy being active around the garden.

What drew you to the Zilker Botanical Garden Conservancy’s mission?

I am drawn to promote the Conservancy’s mission because growing up in Austin, the Garden was known for being an iconic spot. I think the natural spaces in the heart of the city make Austin a cool city, but now I understand how much care it takes to maintain.

Is there a skill or area of knowledge that you’re most excited to grow during your time at the Garden this summer?

It is a huge life goal of mine to be a plants person. I hope that by the end of the summer, I will have the skills to attempt to keep my own plants happy.

Do you have a favorite outdoor activity to do in Texas?

Even despite the Texas weather, I really love to play soccer with my family and friends.

Tell me a little bit about your other hobbies and interests!

I enjoy knitting, reading, and eating various sweet treats.

Samantha will be working in lots of spaces around our Gardens this summer – be sure to say hello if you see her during your visit!
