Docent Training

Janie Trevino, the new Education Coordinator at Zilker Botanical Garden Conservancy is very excited to invite you all to join our team of educated garden guides. We are reinvigorating and growing our Docent Program, but we need your help! 

What is a Docent?

Docents love to learn. If learning new facts about horticulture, nature space, and gardening, being a docent could be for you. Explore and discover passions for new subject areas related to the tours and activities we host!
Docents love sharing knowledge. It’s one thing to know stuff, but if you find yourself saying, “Did you know that…” to friends and family, becoming a docent will allow you to share facts and ideas with many Garden guests.
Docents want to make a difference. Guiding student tours and hosting activities contributes to students’ better understanding of the subjects they learn in school. Offering a hands on learning experience builds community and inspires a deeper appreciation of the botanical world.
Docents are creative thinkers and doers. Docent committees are frequently involved in designing and improving tours and activities specifically for Garden guests. Docents are also encouraged to add their own enthusiasm and presentation skills as they present tours. Although the training and basic information is the same for all docents, no two present a tour exactly the same way.
Docents enjoy making new friends. By working together, Docents spend time in activities that enrich our outlook on life and garden topics. You may walk in as a stranger, but within minutes, you will feel welcomed as a member of an awesome group of friends and co-volunteers.
