The Garden is not able to offer guided programs as of March 10, 2021. We are gradually increasing capacity and options for visitors as it is deemed safe to do so based on recommendations by Austin Public Health and the Parks and Recreation Department, and look forward to reinstating guided programs in the near future.
Teachers/leaders are welcome to bring their groups for a self-guided visit, keeping in mind group size limits of 10 individuals (which includes leaders as well as participants). So, if you have a group of 8 students/youth and want to bring 4 adults, you would need to subdivide into two groups for your visit to keep within the group limits. Please check back for updates and safely enjoy your visit.
All school tours require a reservation, including self-guided or docent-requested. For more information or to make tour reservations, please contact Marion Alsup with AAGC at email@example.com or Cindy Klemmer with PARD at Cynthia.Klemmer@austintexas.gov.
Trained docents from the Zilker Docents AAGC club lead informational tours for groups of 15-18 students, preschool through high school age. This basic tour is correlated to the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) and was developed to provide information for Austin area school teachers as they tour the Zilker Botanical Gardens. The ZBG Self-Guided Tour is available online in PDF format, which can be viewed and printed with Acrobat Reader.
Each tour is roughly 90 minutes with individual docents bringing their specific knowledge to each tour. All docents know the gardens well and are trained to work with a variety of student groups. When you register, please identify any special requests as certain docents are especially facile with special needs groups, including ESL children. March, April and May are especially busy months, so please make your reservations early. Requested donation is $1 per student in addition to the required admission. Please talk to the president of the Zilker Docents if that presents a hardship for your school.
Book Lending Program
For children in younger grades, we now offer a free book lending program which includes copies of The Story of Mother Tree and Journey of the Third Seed. Teachers are welcome to call in advance to reserve the books and pick them up at the reception desk upon arrival.
