Texas Star Mushroom Walk
January 10 @ 12:00 pm – 1:00 pm
Join us to look at our new state mushroom Texas Star Mushroom also known as the Devil’s Cigar, or Chorioactis geaster. It is unique to our state and is only found in a few other geographic locations – Japan and Taiwan. Scientists are perplexed as to why it is so geographically distributed and separated genetically by 18 million years. The mushroom hisses when at opens and spreads its spore. Watch Video. You may recognize the mushroom because it is part of the Central Texas Mycological Society logo.
Angel Schatz radiates passion for understanding the ecosystem of central Texas and making mycology education accessible to anyone who shares interest. She is also a member of leadership team of Austin Organic Gardeners; harmonizing vegetable gardening and mushroom growing, particularly by using recycled mushroom blocks. Formally an experience designer and animator in the tech world, she hopes to inspire more people to dial into the wood-wide-web.
