The Zilker Botanical Garden Conservancy works in partnership with the city of Austin Parks and Recreation Department to provide a zen escape from busy city life. The Conservancy is a nonprofit that aims to enhance the Garden.


Zilker Botanical Garden Conservancy is seeking a dynamic and experienced Marketing and Communications Specialist to help us amplify our mission!

Zilker Botanical Garden Conservancy is a growing non-profit dedicated to the cultivation of community and fostering life-long learning that inspires an appreciation of the botanical world. As our Marketing & Communications Specialist, you’ll play a vital role in expanding our reach and building strong relationships with our community. You’ll be responsible for developing and implementing engaging marketing and communication strategies that promote our mission and drive support for our programs. This position is a full-time, permanent position that works closely with the Executive Director and the Community Engagement. The salary range starts at $62,500 and is negotiable based on experience and qualifications.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Content Creation & Storytelling: Develop compelling content for various platforms, including website, social media, email newsletters, and press releases, highlighting our impact and inspiring action.
  • Digital Marketing & Social Media Management: Manage and grow our social media presence, create engaging campaigns, and analyze performance to optimize reach and engagement.
  • Media Relations & Public Outreach: Cultivate relationships with media outlets, write press releases, coordinate media interviews, and represent the organization at community events.
  • Data Analysis & Reporting: Track and analyze marketing and communication metrics to evaluate effectiveness and inform future strategies.
  • Brand Management: Ensure consistent messaging and brand identity across all communication channels.
  • Internal Collaboration: Initiate internal meetings to align communication efforts with organizational goals.
  • Community Engagement Strategies: Develop targeted marketing strategies to increase participation in Garden programs and events. 
  • Membership & Development Support: Align marketing efforts with donor and member engagement goals. Support the planning and execution of fundraising events, community outreach programs, and other organizational initiatives
  • Special Events: Collaborate with other departments to ensure successful event execution.
  • External Communications: Manage the Garden’s website and oversee the creation and distribution of the monthly newsletter, including managing subscriber lists and optimizing engagement.

The ideal team-member will have:

  • Minimum 3 Years of Proven Communications Experience, preferably in a Non-Profit Setting: Experience working with diverse stakeholders, including volunteers, donors, and community members, is a plus!
  • Strong Content Creation and Storytelling Skills with a Focus on Impact: Ability to craft compelling narratives that highlight the organization’s mission and impact across various platforms (website, social media, newsletters, press releases). Experience in capturing and sharing human-centered stories that resonate with target audiences is essential.
  • Proficiency in Digital Communications and Marketing Tools: Demonstrated experience managing social media platforms, email marketing campaigns, website content, and basic graphic design. Familiarity with CRM databases and analytics tools to track and measure communication effectiveness.
  • Experience in Media Relations and Public Outreach: Ability to develop and maintain relationships with media outlets, write press releases, and coordinate public events. Experience in crafting key messages and responding to media inquiries is important.
  • Excellent Project Management and Collaboration Skills: Ability to manage multiple communication projects simultaneously, meet deadlines, and collaborate effectively with internal teams and external partners. Strong organizational skills and attention to detail are vital for success in this role.
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Marketing, Communications, or a Related Field: The ideal team member will demonstrate a foundational understanding of marketing principles, strategies, and best practices.
  • Strong Written and Verbal Communication Skills: The ability to create compelling marketing copy, develop engaging presentations, and effectively communicate with internal and external stakeholders is crucial.
  • Creative Thinking and Problem-Solving Abilities: The capacity to generate innovative marketing ideas, adapt to changing market trends, and overcome challenges is vital for success in this role.

Qualifications:

  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in marketing and communications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Marketing, Communications, Public Relations, or a related field – additional work experience will be considered in lieu of college degree
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, with a knack for storytelling
  • Strong understanding of digital marketing principles and social media management
  • Excellent organizational and project management skills, with the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously
  • Familiar with Adobe Creative Suite
  • Passion for our mission and a commitment to making a positive impact
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative team
