Southern US Premiere of the Earliest Known Asian American Film “The Oath of the Sword” at Zilker Botanical Garden

AUSTIN, TX – August 20, 2024 – The Austin Asian American Film Festival (AAAFF) and the Zilker Botanical Garden Conservancy are thrilled to announce the Southern US Premiere of The Oath of the Sword, a recently rediscovered silent film from 1914. This historic screening will take place on September 5th, 2024, at Zilker Botanical Garden, offering audiences a unique opportunity to experience the earliest known Asian American film in a breathtaking outdoor setting.

The Oath of the Sword is more than just a film screening; it’s an immersive cultural event that promises to captivate audiences of all ages. The program includes:

  • Live Musical Accompaniment: Local Japanese American composer James Tabata and his ensemble Maru Haru will provide a live score, bringing this silent film to life in an unforgettable performance.
  • Austin Japanese Minyo Dance: Enjoy a traditional fisherman folk dance performed by the Austin Japanese Minyo Dance group, adding a rich cultural dimension to the evening.
  • Opening Remarks: Hear from the Austin Asian American Film Festival and James Tabata as they provide insights into the significance of The Oath of the Sword and its place in film history.
  • VIP Guided Tours: Gain exclusive access to the Japanese Garden with guided tours led by Evan Taniguchi, offering a deeper connection to the cultural heritage on display.

Programming Synopsis from AAAFF:
Recently restored and known as the earliest Asian American-produced film in the United States (1914), the film follows the ambitious Masao and his lover Hisa in Japan. Soon Masao leaves Hisa to pursue his education at The University of California, Berkeley. As he becomes a star athlete and student, Hisa languishes alone in Japan while caring for her ailing father. As their reunion approaches, they find themselves embroiled in an unexpected love triangle that ends in tragedy.
