Zilker Botanical Garden Conservancy Completes First Major Capital Campaign Project

Austin, TX – September 23, 2024 – Zilker Botanical Garden Conservancy is thrilled to announce the successful completion of the Butler Window Restoration Project, a significant milestone reached in June 2024. The project revitalizes an important historical feature that enhances the Garden’s rich heritage and provides a stunning backdrop for visitors.

Originally part of the Butler Mansion, the Butler Window was relocated to Zilker Botanical Garden in 1971 following the mansion’s demolition. This iconic architectural element has been meticulously restored with a focus on preserving its historical significance while enhancing its functionality and visual appeal.

The restoration project included the construction of new retaining walls using Butler bricks and granite that mirror the materials used in both the Butler Window and the Texas State Capitol. These improvements ensure the structural stability of the hillside beneath the window, a popular spot for photos and events. The project also involved reinforcing the hillside to better support the area and enhance visitor experience.

The completion of this project marks a proud moment for the Zilker Botanical Garden Conservancy, highlighting the completion of their first major capital campaign which served to preserve a historical treasure and enhance the beauty of this space. The Butler Window now stands as a beautifully restored landmark, offering a glimpse into the Garden’s past and serving as a picturesque setting for future events.

A ribbon-cutting ceremony took place on September 20, 2024, to formally celebrate the project’s completion. Members of the Garden’s community, project partners, and Butler family members were in attendance.

Meta Butler (great granddaughter of Michael Butler) was joined by Butler family members and project partners for the ribbon cutting.

The Butler Window Restoration Project is supported by the Austin Parks Foundation, the Government of Ireland Emigrant Support Programme, the Butler Family, and the generosity of donors and community members.
