Beekeeping and Pollinators

November 15, 2023 @ 10:00 am 11:30 am

Open to the public, free to attend

Learn about beekeeping and pollinators with Nona Evans during the monthly Yaupon Garden Club meeting. Nona Evans is the CFO for Spillers Farm & Ranch, LLL, the family business that manages a 200+ acre crop and cattle farm and a 160-acre ranch in Sequin, TX which is robust with Yaupon trees. Their hives draw nectar from an early spring bloom which gives the honey a distinct caramel flavor. Spillers Honeybee Farms sell their honey and products through word of mouth and the Plant Plug Pop-Up Market on Jones Road. Nona’s interest stemmed from a lifelong passion for and career in food. One in three bits of food we eat requires pollination.

Nona Evans Spillers was the founding Executive Director of Whole Kids Foundation, an Austin-based international non-profit organization, whose mission is to improve childhood nutrition. It developed programs that support pollinator education for K-12 students as well as funding beehives for schools across the US, UK, and Canada. Nona is the coordinator for Deep Roots, a community garden in Downtown Austin. She is the Bee Mentor for the Bowie High School bee club and mentors several aspiring Central Texas beekeepers.
