Yellow Cattleyas: The Classics, The 90s & The Heavy Lifters with Karl Varian

Our guest speaker Karl Varian’s topic is “Yellow Cattleyas: The Classics, The 90’s & The Heavy Lifters.” Karl graduated from the University of Colorado at Boulder where he earned both his B.S and M.S. degrees in electrical engineering. He worked for several large companies in North Texas including Raytheon, Texas Instruments, Rockwell International & Varian Associates prior to his retirement.

Karl began growing orchids in the 1960’s. His collection of warm & intermediate growing plants includes orchids in the cattleya alliance, dendrobiums, encyclias, phalaenopsis, phragmipediums & vandas. He entered the American Orchid Society judging program in 2016 & serves as an Associate Judge at the Dallas Judging Center. Karl is the 2022 President of the Greater North Texas Orchid Society. His wife of fifty years, Carol, serves as GNTOS’s Secretary.
